The Rare Self-Portrait, After Doing Battle

Published 30 November 2007

It’s quite infrequently that I find want or need to point the camera at myself. Usually, when I do it’s only to document one specific moment in time, rather than an attempt at any kind of serious artistic endeavours. This moment for me was quite special. I had been awake for about 48 hours at this point… had touched three states since I had waken, and would cross a few more before I slept again. I had arrived at the dunes earlier this morning, at about 2 am. The moon was high and bright and fate would not allow me to sleep this night. The sun came up fast over the mountains. The winds were cold, and the intense winds blowing sand in every direction.

Upon finally making it back to the car, I felt I had survived something. Not just that day, but for the past eighteen days on the road. I felt like I had accomplished something; done something worthwhile and memorable. This moment marked the relative end of the journey, and the beginning of the long drive home.

So, here I am. Unmasked, dirty, and tired… After surviving the Great Sand Dunes. And, no smart-ass comments about the face… The sun was in my eyes. Ah, just kidding; ridicule away!

P.S. I’ve got one more shot that will finally end this journey and then I’m off for a while. I’ll be setting the site on hold while I work on some real-world projects over the next few weeks/months. Whatever it may be.
