Many Glacier Panorama

Please, take a moment to click through and view this one LARGE (915kb). Even if you happen to be on dial-up, right click and select “Save As…” Wait a bit. It will be worth it. I’m not saying these things because I am over confident in my photographic abilities. But because this is one of those places that can make you a better person to have seen… It’s just a stunning location, and to put it into perspective, here’s some history:

Glacier National Park borders Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada—the two parks are known as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, and were designated as the world’s first International Peace Park in 1932. Both parks were designated by the United Nations as Biosphere Reserves in 1976, and in 1995 as World Heritage sites. When Glacier National Park was founded, there were over 150 glaciers known to exist within its boundaries. As of 2005, only 27 remained. Scientists believe that by the year 2030, Glacier National Park (as well as most of the Rockies) will be completely devoid of glacial activity.

So, take a minute. Find the tiny traces of the glaciers which remain visible here. Consider that in just a few years they will likely be completely gone. And think about what small things you may be able to do to reduce your carbon footprint and slow the disappearance.

Sorry for the rant.

This was taken in the Many Glacier area of Glacier National Park, Montana overlooking Swiftcurrent Lake. Twelve stitched images taken about ten minutes after sunset.
