Curves, Dunes, and the Moon

Published 7 November 2007

So, we’ve arrived at the final destination of this trip, and the final few images of this series. This shot (as well as the last one) were taken in The Great Sand Dunes National Park, in southern Colorado. Here’s a map of the general area where this dune series was taken. It’s almost as incredible from the air as it is walking amoung them.

The dunes were a magical and bizzare landscape, even more so to see it alone under a full moon. I had arrived at roughly 01:30 in the morning, but just could not resist wandering about for a few hours. I would end up wandering a few miles until nearly morning. I rested my eyes for a few hours before the sun rose and then drug myself up again to catch sunrise before heading 22 hours back to New Orleans later that day. The final 48 hours of this trip were, needless to say, rather incredible and exhausting.

But. What remains are some fairly remarkable memories. And I hope that everyone had enjoyed just a bit of what I experienced finding these images. And once again, I do thank everyone for the many kind words. I can not express that appreciation enough. It is these words that give me the insight and confidence to continue searching.

Approximately 45 second exposure @ f/5.6, under a full moon.
