Bulletin Board

Published 5 August 2007

While not quite as poignant as the bulleting board in yesterday’s post, I thought this made a nice accompaniment. I loved all the textures from the peeling paint and grime throughout the building. Peeling paint certainly abounded all over the place, and there was no shortage of gritty, moldy stuff either. This was just opposite the wall in the last photo.

Otto posted a nice bit of history about this jail over at his site:

“The prison opened in 1918 and housed 150 federal prisoners for 47 years. At its peak, it produced enough food (growing vegetables, milking cows, and slaughtering pigs) to feed themselves and the prison population of the Atlanta Penitentiary. The city acquired the property in 1965 from the federal government and housed as many as 400 prisoners. We believe that its last use was as a pre-trial detential center for the city.”
