Bear Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park

Published 28 September 2007

This was my first glimpse of the Rockies. I had actually arrived late the night before after dark, and walked the short trail to this lake. It was so gorgeous and being there all alone in the still, cool night air was something special indeed. There was a beautiful light fog hovering just over the water’s surface. I was hooked instantly- and quite excited about what was yet to come – “If this was only my first look at these mountains,” I thought, “just imagine what must lie waiting to be discovered…”

I was not to be disappointed. There are many of these such lakes in the rockies, nestled in hanging valleys such as this one created by past glacial activity between (usually) snow covered peaks. I tried to find as many as possible in my much too brief wanderings here.

I came back early the next morning well before sunrise in the bitter cold to catch this… here the sun’s light is just coming up over the treetops behind me to hit the distant peaks. I’m not particularly hooked on the composition, but the light just really can’t be beat!

This particular lake is Bear Lake, in Rocky Mountain National park, just east of the continental divide. Here’s a map, showing the lake just in the center, apparently during winter nearly frozen over.

INFO: 1/10 second @ f/16, Fuji Velvia 100.
