Decathlon  du Vignaud

On with gardening. I'll try to make this fairly quick...

The Garden was the other big project of the lest five weeks. It was rough getting it going, but it's already paying off as things are starting to grow fast now with the warmer weather.
The very first project was to turn an old barrel from the cave into a strawberry planter. Geneanne's grandfather built this barrel by hand probably about sixty years ago... Of course, we had to give it a fresh coat of 'Le Vignaud Blue' to spruce it up and give it new life. Wonder what it will be next?

  • Tiny Strawberries
  • Giving an old barrel new life.
  • Beautiful.
First flowers!

I was able to get a pretty early jump on everything and had seeds planted already by the first week of March... we still had some freezing days then, so that's not too bad of a start.

      • The Beginnings of the Garden
      • Work Station
Bare Dirt- It took us almost three weeks to get to this point! We were working by hand and had to first break up the grass and then turn the hard dirt. It was still a little bit early in the season as well, so the soil was quite difficult to work. One section at a time...

      • Digging
      • A Little More...
      • Almost there....
Finally time to plant cold weather crops– March 14 and we already had potatoes,  onions, shallots, and garlic in the ground!

      • Time to Plant!
      • Surveying the plot.
      • Preparing the Soil.
      • Tubers chitted and ready for planting.
      • Here goes...
      • Planting Oinions

Constructing a 'serre' to house some of the more tender plants until the weather warms up.

      • Just After Planting... nothing sprouting yet!
